62 kinds of Xiguan snacks have standardized English translations.

Yesterday (9th), the two-month "Collection of Translated Names of Xiguan Cuisine" ended. After selection by citizens and experts, 62 kinds of Xiguan famous snacks and old Xiguan famous brands have standardized English translations. From the final result, we can see that it not only respects the cultural tradition without losing the Cantonese flavor, but also allows foreign tourists to see it at a glance, so as not to "check it out" when ordering.

"Terrapin", "Turtle" and foreigner "give their brains"

According to Liang Dong, deputy director of Liwan District Tourism Bureau and director of Liwan District Tourism Promotion Center, 3,848 valid translations were collected from the society. Among the candidate translations, there were both well-behaved translations according to the whole name and interesting translations of ghosts and horses. As the number of translated names collected greatly exceeded the organizer’s expectation, in order to give the judges more time to carefully select the best translated names, the organizer had to extend the expert review time and postpone the date of publishing the results.

There are a lot of judges in this translation activity, including college English teachers born and raised in Guangzhou, "returnees" who have returned from studying abroad, foreigners who have settled down in Guangzhou and professional translation companies. In the process of translation, the translation team translated the allusions, ingredients and practices of each Xiguan cuisine into English, and showed them to foreigners first, so that they could understand each food clearly and then express their views on the selected translated names. Liang Dong also revealed that the organizers also specially consulted experts on food culture, brand marketing education and other aspects in order to achieve "faithfulness and elegance".

There are also six kinds of food "left blank"

"Some people suggest adopting Cantonese transliteration to strengthen local cultural characteristics; Some suggestions for free translation, coupled with the supplementary introduction of the main ingredients, can not only retain the characteristics of traditional cuisine, but also make foreigners understand it. After synthesizing the opinions of all parties, although the former has local characteristics, it is still difficult to become a household name in the short term, and it will also make foreigners confused, so they decided to adopt the latter’s opinions. " Liang Dong took "Buddha jumping over the wall" as an example. At that time, some netizens translated it into "The Mad Monk" very interestingly. It was simple, interesting and easy to remember, but after consulting people from ethnic and religious departments, it was considered inappropriate and abandoned.

In addition, there are six translated names of Xiguan cuisine with local characteristics. After many discussions and studies between the organizers and the judges, and after soliciting the opinions of some "Old Xiguan", they still feel that there is no translation name that is the most suitable, comprehensive and can best express this traditional feature, so the organizers left it blank and did not select the translation name, leaving it for the future to collect more suitable translations, but the judges also enthusiastically provided their translation opinions.

Liang Dong also said that the translated names selected in this activity will be used in the upcoming Asian Games version of "Eating in Xiguan". After the Spring Festival, Liwan District Tourism Promotion Center will also work out guidelines for the use of translated names in combination with the ethnic, religious and local living habits of most tourists visiting Guangzhou, and widely recommend them to relevant catering enterprises for application. By then, foreigners can eat in Xiguan without "pointing their fingers" or going to the kitchen in person.
